FAQs
The Basics: Who We Serve & Where We Are
What is Autism Map Maker?
1
Autism Map Maker is a specialized, year-round non-profit organization serving language-deprived Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and Autistic students from PreK through 12th grade. We operate a highly specialized "Bridge School" and community resource center that provides strict American Sign Language (ASL) immersion, neuro-affirming behavioral support, and trauma-informed care.
Where are you located?
2
Our physical expansion and physical "Bridge School" target the Oklahoma I-35 corridor, specifically bridging the gap between Norman and Ardmore. While we prepare to launch our full-time 9-student cohort in Fall 2026, we are actively operating in the community by hosting workshops, professional development trainings, and consulting with regional clinics.
Is this a permanent, private school?
3
No. We are a "Bridge School," not a final destination. Traditional 9-month school systems often lead to sensory flooding and behavioral crises for neurodivergent, language-deprived students. Our goal is to serve as a 2-to-3-year stabilization and skill-building bridge. We equip students with the functional communication and somatic regulation tools they need to successfully transition back to a less restrictive environment, such as their local public school or the Oklahoma School for the Deaf (OSD).
What is Language Deprivation Syndrome (LDS)?
4
Language Deprivation Syndrome occurs when a Deaf or Hard of Hearing child does not receive accessible, natural language (like ASL) during their critical early years of brain development. It is a structural neurological crisis, not just a "speech delay." LDS heavily impacts the nervous system and can mimic severe behavioral issues. Our environment is explicitly designed to heal LDS through immersive visual language.
Tuition & The "Sweat Equity" Model
How much is tuition? $0. We know that families navigating complex educational crises are already stretched to their absolute limits financially. Financial barriers should never dictate a child’s access to language. Because our seats are fully funded by corporate, foundation, and tribal sponsorships, families do not pay monetary tuition.
What is "Sweat Equity"? Instead of writing a check, our parents "pay" for their child's enrollment through Sweat Equity. This means parents commit to acquiring the skills necessary for their child to succeed. To maintain enrollment, parents must attend weekly ASL classes, participate in private 1-on-1 parent/child regulation sessions, and attend monthly community workshops. We don’t just teach the student; we heal the entire family unit so your home becomes a communicative sanctuary.
-
While our Board of Directors includes highly experienced Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs), we do not use traditional, compliance-based ABA (such as drilling flashcards or forcing eye contact). We view Autism and Deafness not as a "broken brain" to be fixed, but as a specialized operating system. We utilize neuro-affirming environmental design, trauma-informed somatic regulation, and an understanding of Gestalt Language Processing. If an operating system is crashing, you don't punish the computer; you change the environment.

Because we prioritize "Regulation Before Expectation," our days balance heavy sensory work with functional academics. Our 3:1 student-to-staff ratio ensures flawless safety. A typical day (8:00 AM – 4:00 PM) includes independent, visually guided lab rotations, 1:1 academic instruction, deep proprioceptive sensory input (like gardening or baking), and strict ASL-immersed communication.
-
We are equipped for this. Our executive board includes a Certified Teacher of the DeafBlind. Our physical environment, lighting, and tactile materials are specifically curated to support dual-sensory loss and complex autonomic nervous system needs.
-
We operate on a self-sustaining, "Subsidized Dual-Engine" model.
B2B Consulting: We generate revenue by providing professional development, clinic consulting, and CEU training to regional ABA clinics and educators on DeafAutism best practices.
Corporate & Tribal Seat Sponsorships: Local corporations, foundations, and tribal nations can fully sponsor a student's seat for $35,000 a year, which covers the specialized education, therapies, and holistic care for that child.
-
Yes. Autism Map Maker is a pending 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. While our IRS Form 1023 is processing, we are actively securing a temporary Fiscal Sponsorship with an established community foundation to ensure all corporate and tribal launch capital is securely routed and fully tax-deductible.
